Fortune Magazine, via CNNMoney.com, has announced the 100 fastest growing companies in the United States.
Except they aren't.
The number one company on the list was the diet firm NutriSystem. They had a revenue growth of 225%. Nice.
But thousands of companies grew faster last year. Their revenues increased by several hundred percent. Their work force increased by several hundred percent. Okay, they weren't public companies, so they weren't listed.
The fastest growing companies had one employee last year, and hired another one this year. They made $1,000 last year, and made $10,000 this year. They're plumbers, electricians, caterers, and a thousand small business people, in a thousand small industries that you may have never heard of.
Even my own business is growing faster than NutriSystem's. But then, it had more room to grow! It started pretty small.
The fastest growing companies aren't on the radar screen. They can grow faster because they are more agile, more flexible. Thanks to new call center technology, it's happening in our industry too. Or it should.
