One of our most popular archived posts is Jam Mayer's article Call Center Agent: Interview Questions. The comments section is always filled with notes from aspiring call center agents who want to know how to answer her interview questions.
How do you answer interview questions? Honestly, that's how. If you don't tell the truth about yourself and your abilities, your employer will soon learn the truth. Or they won't give you the chance to prove yourself, because they don't feel they can trust your answers.
Still, here are some of my thoughts about how I would answer Jam's interview questions:
- How much do you know about the call center industry?
Answer: that depends on you, the applicant. How much have you tried to learn? You can learn a lot from reading this blog. Other good sources include Call Center Magazine and TMC Call Center Today. - Are you willing to work on different shifts or schedules, even on weekends or odd hours of the night?
Answer: Tell the truth. Don't lie. Your boss will probably hold you to it. - Are you willing to do overtime work?
Answer: see above. - Have you ever been in a situation that involved problem solving?
Answer: in other words, have you ever successfully solved a problem. Tell about it. - Do you like talking to different people and personalities?
Answer: if you don't, you may not be happy. If you do, you may enjoy call center work more than any other. - Have you sold anything over the phone?
Answer: if you have, tell about it. - Was there a time when you were expected to learn several new things in your job or at school? How did you cope?
Answer: you're supposed to say, "Yes, there was. And I coped well." Prepare your story in advance. - Can you speak other languages other than English?
Answer: Again, tell the truth. You will be tested. If you don't really speak English, you will be tested.
Those are the easy questions. Tomorrow, we'll answer some of the harder ones.
