Advice Column: Passing Call Center Assessments

Faith emailed and asked some advice on how to pass the initial group of exams being conducted in call centers.  This is her story (edited):

exams.gif“Hi! I am applying for a call center job but I still don’t have it. I’ve applied in several call centers and had my exam today but I didn’t make it.  I also went to a job fair and was successful but failed the final interview.  I will not give up and hope that someday I will be able to work in a call center."

Here is an excerpt of my response.

“Most outsourced (international clients) call centers conduct exams specifically on communication skills, both written and verbal.  There is a standard that is expected from all applicants and passing Basic English grammar would be one."

“What I suggest is for you to go through a simple course that will aid you in passing the exams.  Verbal skills are important since this is the core skill that is needed in a call center. There are schools and companies that offer English courses within their organization.  Written skills are important as well, which will include business correspondence and email etiquette."

“The final interview is also critical because the manner you speak, your personality and motivation to join the call center will be evaluated."

It’s pretty simple but if work is being outsourced, it’s a different story.  A lot of people have taken this for granted, thinking that being able to understand and converse in English is enough.

Learn and practice.  Practice.  Practice.  Practice.

i want a job in call center in only night shifts.

My first and last job lasted for 2 years, I handled the best online broker (financial) account. Up to now, I've been looking for the same line of career as a call center agent in a financial account, I had no problems with initial interviews and exams. But it seems to me that I've been failing the final interviews. I had so much to tell and then I tend to jumble the words in my head.

that is correct, even a high school grad can enter the industry. It is only a matter of how you deliver yourself and why the company needs to hire you. It's like selling ice cream to an Eskimo. You need to be ahead of yourself, here are some tips I can share with you
1. practice speaking in a crowd so that you can develop self confidence. Eye contact, that's important. It will give your interviewer the idea that you are confident and that you are serious for the job.
2. read books, magazines, articles, blogs and all the materials that you can possibly gather with your resources. It will enhance your vocabulary and as well your reading comprehension.
3. watch english movies and sitcoms. this will help you acquire ways on how to correctly pronounce words with the correct accent.
4. have the right attitude, especially if you are in front of the interviewer because it will reflect as your attitude towards your future job.
5. be presentable. you don't need to wear an expensive set of formal attire, a semiformal will do. and also you need to look like stress free and doesn't look like haggard at all. this will tell the interviewer that you can take care of yourself, that you can handle the pressure working in a call center.
6. pray, always keep in mind that praying is a best way to build your confidence and also asking for guidance shows how you really like to have the job. just dont do it in front of the interviewer or the facilitator. just be silent and focus. overconfidence will lead you to disaster.

i hope the info helps.

I agree that understanding English is not enough to force shield their selves in applying in a this industry, and its true that some points of it needed a good verbal and communications skills to go threw this job. Your advice might be the key to success of every job seekers who are trying to apply in this kind of industry.

in able to be confident to speak in english.. you always have to think in english and then speak in english. for you to be comfortable to conversate using the english language. also, listening to english conversations through internet or tv will help you a lot.
