Thanks to Samurai-ko for letting me tell her story here. It’s a simple one but very true. I remember exchanging stories with my colleagues, similar to this one. It’s a good one to tell during a smoke break while you are trying to de-stress after a long day. Stories like these just prove we will always get a call that is unexpected plus it isn’t as easy as some would think it is. Here is an excerpt:
“One day, Becky (best friend who also works with me) gets a call that lasts, if memory serves, an hour and fifteen minutes (average call time for us is 15 minutes, by the way). This caller was, to put it mildly, not the brightest bulb on the tree. She spent a good part of that time teaching the person how to... drumroll... COPY AND PASTE. Yep, you read that right - how to highlight text, hit CONTROL-C, then click where it's supposed to go and click CONTROL-V. Not that hard, right? Wrong."
Samurai-ko left for lunch while this call was being handled. Half an hour later, she went back to her post. Lo and behold, the call she answered was from the same person Becky received previously. A lot more questions were asked and finally….
"I hear *click* *click*, then I hear the phrase that will haunt me to my dying day."
Caller: "Hey, what's that flashing thing?"
Samurai-ko: "What flashing thing?"
"The same look goes across the face of every single person listening - tell me that caller didn't just ask what I think the caller just asked. Nope, they're right, because the caller goes on to say, "When I stop typing, there is this flashing thing. What's that?" I close my eyes and take a deep breath, praying for strength from any deity that might happen to be listening."
"That's your cursor."
