Health Concerns with Call Center Work

There have been studies claiming of the several health risks working in a call center.  I will list some of the basic concerns, not to discourage people from starting a career in this industry, but to educate and know that there are ways to avoid it.

RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury)
A condition that is caused by doing an action over and over again.  An example would be typing for hours, without any adjustments to your position.  This can lead to aches in the hands, wrists, arms, shoulders and the back.  It is also caused by having to work fast and under pressure, for long periods of time.

To avoid this, make sure you get enough breaks in between.  Do ergonomic exercises or stand up to stretch while waiting for a call.  Your chair should be comfortable enough, so as not to strain your back. Stretch with your seat mate.

Acoustic Shock
This usually happens when you hear a sudden burst of loud noise in your headset.  This can be as simple as customers tapping into a handset, whistling over the phone, or a loud shriek and usually has a high tone.  This will damage your hearing in the long term.

Get a headset that has noise cancelling features.  Adjust the volume as well and make sure isn’t all the way up.  Put it in the middle just enough to hear your customer.

Sore Throat / Loss of Voice
Sometimes referred to as "dysphonia" or voice impairment, you wake up and realize you are unable to speak.  Your throat is painful and feels like you're going to have a cold.

Always have a water bottle on your station.  Drink lots of it, especially if you had to talk for hours on end.  Avoid too much caffeine (I know this is hard) or carbonated drinks.

I hope this helped and if you have any specific questions to any of these and found other health risks, let us know.
