Job fairs, head hunters, HR executive search firms and newspaper ads. Even employed, these groups will hunt you down especially if you are very marketable. This is one crossroad that a call center manager has right now.
His story: “I recently have been offered 3 opportunities from different sources. It’s a good problem but the final decision still rests on making the right one. One offers me a possible promotion to Director in a matter of months. The other would mean taking care of two functions but on a regional scope. Lastly, the other would be from another company offering the same job but more money and a training opportunity to expand my knowledge. Everything looks good but it’s a matter of principle versus money. I need both, but can’t decide which to pick to ensure a growth in my career.”
The normal method would be to list down the pros and cons of each situation and logically pick the one that has more weight towards success and happiness. To help you further, I can give you a list of questions to ask yourself before deciding.
-
Get more feedback from people who work currently in the other company. You might have some friends who can give you some insight on what their management style is like.
-
Don't rely on empty promises. You stated "possible promotion". Is there a timeline or a criteria set to ensure you get it?
-
Be well rounded. Being an expert in a field is awesome but it is more advantageous to learn more what other functions play. Believe it or not, running a call center means understanding both profitability and quality.
-
Are you comfortable dealing with new ideas and processes, knowing that we are working in a volatile and fast paced environment?
-
Do you want to make a difference in your field?
-
Will you be able to help yourself and a team of call center professionals revolutionize the ever changing industry?
Money has always been a driving factor and a reason to move to another call center but it’s better to drive change where you are at. You not only gain respect from your colleagues but you don’t have to deal with more stress in a new environment.
