Rich at MarketingBlurb quotes a Harris Interactive Report that states that 3 out of 4 Americans are on the FTC Do Not Call list.
This regulation had a devastating effect on the Outbound Telemarketing industry, but there are still firms out there doing a lot of outbound cold calling. Why is that?
The Do Not Call regulations do not prohibit a company from calling its customers or even prospective customers that have inquired about services or products. I know a number of call centers that are still focused entirely on outbound calling. The change now is that they are calling, for the most part, existing customers and trying to upsell them on additional products or features.
This may include a mortgage company calling existing customers to get them to refinance or do a debt consolidation loan.
It may include a phone company calling its customers to get them to sign up for DSL or other services.
It may include a direct response company calling to get the customer to buy that next video.
The Do Not Call regulations certainly hurt the telemarketing industry, but it did not kill it.
